New Adsense Video Ads

September 25th, 2006

I just noticed Google has a new Adsense format. This is a great new addition and I think that it is about time. With ISP’s providing high connection speeds and limits, this form of media shouldn’t pose any problems. The nice thing that I like about this advert style is that you can choose whether to watch it or not!

Google Video Adsense

The only issue at this stage for Google is that their video advertisements reserves are low and therefore you may not see a video ad for a little while…

Just testing…

Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language

September 22nd, 2006

“Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language Could Allow Remote Code Execution.” This advisory provides a general overview of the problem and, fortunately, also provides a robust interim work-around to disable Windows’ and IE’s VML parsing. This can and should be used until Microsoft has repaired the buffer overrun in the VGX.DLL VML parser that is being actively exploited on the Internet. - Microsoft’s VML Security Advisory

Many sites have been using this security hole to run spyware and malware on visitors to thier sites. You won’t even know that you have downloaded the software. To prevent your browser from recognising the VML script and running it, you should disable the parser for a little while (see below). The only thing that you will be missing out on, from removing the parser, is the odd advertisement on some sites. There are also instructions to register the parser again at a later stage.

How to temporarily protect your system:
As detailed in Microsoft’s VML security advisory (see link above), you can quickly, easily, and safely protect your system from possible VML exploitation by “unregistering” the defective DLL. The system will no longer be able to render web-based vector markup language graphics, but you won’t notice any difference since few sites use VML for benign purposes.

Simply copy this command from this page (highlight the entire line then type Ctrl-C to Copy it into the clipboard), then open the “Run…” dialog by pressing your system’s Start button and choosing “Run…” Press “Backspace” to remove anything that might already be in the “Open” field, then type “Ctrl-V” to paste the command into the field. Press “OK” to execute the command and you should receive a dialog confirming that the VGX.DLL file has been “unregistered”…

regsvr32 -u “%CommonProgramFiles%Microsoft SharedVGXvgx.dll”

Please tell your family and friends and the word. Since this newly discovered Windows VML defect is being actively exploited by thousands of web sites to install malware, and since viewing malicious email with many versions of Outlook will also cause this to occur, EVERY Windows user is a potential victim. Please help people to protect themselves.

Once Microsoft has repaired this defect, which should happen no later than the second Tuesday in October (Oct. 10th) - and after you have applied those October security updates - you should re-register the repaired VGX.DLL file by repeating the steps above, but using a command without the “-u” argument, as follows:

regsvr32 “%CommonProgramFiles%Microsoft SharedVGXvgx.dll”

At that time, please also remind anyone you may have helped to protect themselves through un-registering the DLL to re-register it AFTER they have updated their system with the current October patches.

Thanks to Security Now! for pointing this out to me! Great Podcast by the way!

Avoid Using Frames

September 22nd, 2006

“Frames allow an author to display multiple documents in a single window that is divided into rectangular subspaces called frames. Visual browsers allow these frames to be scrolled independently of each other, and links can be loaded in a frame without changing the content of other frames.

The HTML 4 frames model has significant flaws that make frames hated by many users. Frames should only be used with great care;…” - WDG

Frames pose a number of issues and reason for you not to use them in your site’s design/layout. I always preach against using frames unless it is absolutely neccessary for anyone to use them. If you are going to use frames, make use to set the doctype correctly:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Frameset//EN"

This will declare the document to be HTML 4.01 Frameset.

Some of the main factors/reasons for not using frames are not all SEO related. The problems with frames are mostly related to accessibility and usability.

Any browsers that do not support frames will basicly skip over the frame tags and the frames would not be displayed. There is a NOFRAMES element that allows the webmaster to specify content for these browsers that fail to show frames; this only means that he/she has to put in some extra effort.

On the search engine side, a cache version of the page that is in a frame does not store that fact that it was actually meant to be in a frame. When a visitor clicks on the link to the framed page, they go straight to the page and not to the parent page that includes the framed page. The visitor will them be viewing an incomplete version of the original page. There are scripts that can help to redirect the page to the parent page, but then again not all browsers will support the script.

Iframes are less complicated than using the above framesets, but they still suffer most of the same problems.

There are also CSS issues with frames. You cannot control the look and feel of a framed document with the CSS file of the main page. Some people have claimed that it is possible using JavaScript in the CSS, but I have not seen a working example yet. It just gets too complicated!

The bottom line is… avoid using frames! For company intranets there is less concern and there will be cases where frames can be useful. Think carefully before using frames; there is probably a better solution out there.

Adobe Acrobat 8.0 demonstrated

September 18th, 2006

“Adobe is hoping to pull ahead - way ahead - in the competition with Microsoft for office worker tools with Acrobat 8.” - PodTech News

For those of you who use Adobe Acrobat, the new version 8 (released last week) has some nice advances on the older version.

The demonstration of the top features of the new system also shows off the new navigations and menu UI which is intended to make tasks and operations easier to find. There are a couple of new additions to the software that really stand out! The new forms engine, meeting area and collaboration methods will definiftely improve project management and reduce the amount of miscommunication.

I look forward to testing the meeting area that allows people to see your desktop in a conference meeting; could come in quite handy!

Thanks PodTech for the demo!

Blog Promotion Challenge

September 16th, 2006

Well the challenge is on! A couple of us started a challenge at WebDigity Forums to see who could be the first to get their web related blog ranked in the top 100000 at Technorati.

Technorati

Now this is where I need your help! Don’t tell the others, as they may feel left out and cheated… I am one of the furthest from the target; I need all the help I can get.

Please could you help me by giving me tips on achieving this goal we have set? I am sure that one of the main ranking criteria is the number of blogs that link to the one in question. I am also sure that there are other factors, but I don’t know what they are.

If you are willing to help me out by linking to this blog from your blog, I will help you out by promoting your blog in the blog section of The 100 Lists Web Directory! I will create your account (with the minimum amount) for you if you can send me the page that the link is on; don’t forget to send me your full details for your blog submission.
